Ghost Cats [Spooky!]
The “ghosts” of these cats are represented by white castings and were modeled to reflect the physical body type of the animals from the original colony.
The thirty-nine sculptures are dispersed throughout the prison where they can be seen on the self-guided tour.
The cats are part of an art installation by Linda Brenner in remembrance of the cat colony that took over the penitentiary after it was shut down and abandoned, as well as to the man who dedicated much of his time in taking care of them, Dan McCloud.
After Eastern State Penitentiary was closed in 1971, a colony of cats moved in.
The sculptures are placed at various locations throughout the prison grounds.
These sculptures represent the colony of cats that took up residence in the prison grounds after the closing of the penitentiary in 1971.
It is a testimony to survival.
